David McCallum portrays Gwyllm Griffiths, a Welsh coal miner "thrust forward into our biological future by Professor Mathers, using a machine that compresses ten thousands years of evolution into the space of a few seconds.  Once the "self-generating force" of evolution is unleashed by the device, Gwyllm continues to evolve - his cranium expands, his hair vanishes, and he develops a sixth finger on each hand for additional dexterity - until he becomes the superintellect of a million years in our future, unable to relate to the human condition anymore than we can relate to apes by comparison.

Bwyllm's bulbous-brained countenance is the The Outer Limits most recognizable images, and The Sixth Finger, one of the series' most creative and provocative episodes.
